By blogger | May 23, 2009
If you need help with dealing with child behaviour problems, and ask your friends and family for advice, the chances are high that you will hear conflicting opinions. Some peoples opinions about how to handle child behaviour problems are quite old- fashioned. They think that yelling or spanking are perfectly acceptable methods because they worked for them. Today however, we know through research that yelling and spanking can be harmful to the child. Parents who yelled at their kids when dealing with children’s behaviour problems are teaching their children that yelling is okay to solve problems. Therefore their children model their behaviour by yelling themselves. So if yelling and spanking are ineffective ways of dealing with children’s behavior problems what options are available to parents?
Let us explore some other effective discipline methods that can be used to handle children’s behaviour problems. If the child is very young, then saying”no” in a firm manner is often enough to teach them that you do not approve of a particular behaviour. sometimes, however, saying “no” is not enough and then a further step needs to be taken. If the child does not respond to “known” then a parent should remove the child physically away from that unacceptable activity. Other effective ways of dealing with unacceptable child behaviour with a child who is very young are using timeout or removing your attention from the child. This strategy means taking the child to a boring area of the house, of totally ignoring the child until the child has calmed down. This can be particularly effective with a temper tantrum.
As children grow older they are capable of understanding the logic of rewards and consequences. This means that child behaviour problems can be handled by withholding rewards and stopping prized privileges. for instance, if your child refuses to eat their meal do not force them to do so. Instead remove the meal, and when they asked for a snack suggest that they eat their meal first and then they would be able to have a snack. It is important to remember to always reward good behaviour
Finding positive things to encourage and reward your child can be challenging at times, but remember children do more of what gets rewards. Having more positive communication than negative is important.
